Coal for the Hot Stove

We did this 367 days ago. It was so much; we had to do it again.

Below is our suggestion for a 25-man roster comprised solely of current free agents, as of Dec 31, 2011.

Pos: Player
SP: Edwin Jackson
SP: Roy Oswalt
SP: Hiroki Kuroda
SP: Jeff Francis
SP: Bartolo Colón
Swing: Joe Saunders
Middle: Luis Ayala
Middle: Taylor Buchholz
LOOGY: Mike Gonzalez
Setup: Kerry Wood
Closer: Ryan Madson

C: Chris Snyder
Prince casts a large shadow over
the remaining free agent class.
1b: Prince Fielder
2b: Jeff Keppinger
SS: Ronny Cedeño
3b: Wilson Betemit
LF: Jonny Gomes
CF: Yoennis Cespedes
RF: Kosuke Fukudome

C: Ronny Paulino
IF: Jack Wilson
OF: Coco Crisp
PH Rt: Vladimir Guerrero
PH Lt: Johnny Damon
Bench: J.D. Drew
Bench: Willie Harris

The market had plenty of decent part-time players, but the only legitimate middle of the order bat still available belongs to Prince Fielder. People will be watching Cespedes intently when he unveils his game in the US. There may still be a big season left in the tank of Johnny Damon or Vladdy Daddy. Just like last year, there are a bunch of bullpen options even rolling into January. A team looking to improve their starting rotation still has a few solid #3 starters for sale, as well as innings eaters like Joe Saunders and another handful not listed. Check out mlbtr's regularly updated 2012 Free Agents list to keep up with the diminishing talent pool. What are your thoughts? Reactions? Opinions? We have a couple more posts in the works, but it's unclear if they'll hit the blogosphere until 2012. Have a happy and healthy New Year!

Johnny Damon and Vladimir Guerrero may be competing for the same job.
